Dear Mom,

I love that you bought me this umbrella.

I’m not sure if you thought I’d like the zebra print, or if the aesthetic part of it even crossed your mind. You probably just thought I needed an umbrella that folds up into a convenient, tiny pod that fits in any purse. You’re so thoughtful that way. You’ve always encouraged me and wanted nothing more than for me to be happy, even when I behaved like an ungrateful snot. The physical proof: this bag, referred to simply as “The Dooney”:

Purchased in 1996 as a reward for good grades, I proudly carried this bag for about 3 months in Houston, then refused to use it when we moved to Boise because it wasn’t the style there at the time (enter: snotty teenage years). This is one item I will keep and cherish forever, not just because it serves as a reminder of who I am, where I came from and how I used to be, but it’s also just a great, versatile bag that transcends seasonal blips on the fashion radar. Somehow you knew when you told me to hang on to that bag that I would want it later in life, and I’m so glad I have it now. Savvy, stylish moms like you know a good thing when you see it.

You are endlessly patient, unfailingly kind, and you have that friendly, ingenuous quality that makes everyone you meet want to be around you. A North Carolina-raised lady and true “Southern Belle”, you always look perfectly put together and taught me that a good lipstick is worth its weight in gold. You will always be beautiful to me, and I know that any of the positive traits I was blessed with came from you.

I love you, Moam. Happy Mother’s Day.

Love,

Lizzie
